In sickness and in hell
2004-04-16 // 10:17 p.m.

What a hell of a couple days it's been. Today, however, I can say it's much better.

I ended up in the ER on Wednesday. I woke up at around 4am, but stomach was burning and cramping and it felt like my insides were tied in a big, ugly knot. Not long after that, I started puking... followed by the unplesentness of diarrhea.

I soon realized that I must have a case of the flu, and after I'd vomit a couple times, I'd start to feel better. It was not so. Every 10-15 minutes for 2 straight hours I'd be in the bathroom, vomiting and having diarrhea. Too much info, I know, so I won't go on with the details.

There was nothing left in my stomach to puke up, I couldn't even hold water down, and I was having severe cramping. I woke up Luke and whined and cried and made a fuss (which I had the right to do btw, I was in some serious pain) and made him go to the store at 6 in the morning and get me some Pepto Bismo.

He came back with some generic brand, but it was pepto none the less. It lasted in my stomach for a whole 10 minutes before it came up again.

Luke fell back asleep for a little bit, but I continued to make frequent trips to the bathroom. The pain in my stomach and constant naussea was unreal. I wanted to vomit all the time, but there was nothing left.

Then the blood came. It was bloody diarrhea. And that's when I got scared. When blood starts coming out of places it shouldn't, that's a sure sign that something is wrong. And there was a lot of blood.

Luke called my mom and she left work to come over. I'm really glad she came. I needed her to be motherly, because Luke had no clue what to do. She called the hospital and talked to a nurse, and in the end, the nurse recommend they take me to the ER.

I had a feeling it would come to this, and I loathed it. I wanted to get to the ER so they could help me, I just didn't want to see the bill afterward. Luke and I don't have insurrence. He doesn't get insurrence from his job until August. So we were screwed. But at that point I didn't have a choice, I felt like I was dying... I was incredibly weak and could barely walk. I needed help.

When we got to the ER I just wanted someone to put me out of my misery. The check-in felt like hours and I could barely hold my head up in the wheelchair... I just wanted to lay down, but no one was in a rush.

They finally did put me in a bed that was too short and my feet dangled over the edge, and gave me a blanket that was paper thin.

But from then on, things got better. I had a stay of about 6 hours, not bad. They hooked me up to an IV, poked and probed me, I gave them my fluids to test and I was asked the same questions and told the sames things to 2 nurses, a medical student and a doctor all on seperate occasions. But I think what I needed more than anything was that IV. I was extremely dehidrated... that was why I was so weak, and from the loss of blood I suspect. They also pumped naussea medicine and pain medicine through the IV, and that was a godsend.

They sent me home with no antibiotics, and a strict diet of clear liquids for 24 hours. I don't think I slept so much in one day. Luke did a wonderful job tending to my every need, he even took the night off work.

The next day I had a check-up, and the doctor told me nothing abnormal was found in my tests, and they believe I just had a case of some kind of infectious diarrhea that attacks the walls of the colan. How the hell I got it, I have no idea. I'm really not around that many people throughout the day, and I haven't been really sick like that for years.

But it's over. On Thursday I felt a lot better, but still lethargic and my tummy was feeling weird, so I stayed home from work. And today I think I'm almost back to my old self.

Maybe tomorrow I can start eating dairy products... mmm.
